Responsible Tourism
Introduction
What is responsible Tourism?
This is about preserving the environment for the present and future generations to enjoy. Responsible tourism is all about making places better for the tourists to visit and the people living in those areas. Responsible tourism was enacted in 2002 in Cape Town alongside World Summit on Sustainable Development. This was later embraced by the World Travel Market in 2007 for World Tourism Day. This move urges governments, tour operators, hoteliers, local people and tourists themselves to embrace responsible tourism for future use. World Travel Market has embraced the Cape Town declaration of Responsible Tourism for World Responsible Tourism Day that enhances the industry to ensure is more sustainable.
Responsible Tourism is so important in a way it;
- It reduces negative social, economic and environmental impacts
- It improves economic benefits of the country and the host communities, improves the health of the communities and creates much bond between people and environment.
- Responsible tourism brings closer the local community on the table of decision making on key factors that affect them in their day to day lives.
- It contributes to positively to conserving culture and natural resource heritage for the future use.
- It creates more bonds between the tourists and the local communities this is through activities like cultural dances and this socialization reveals a lot of ongoing issues in the communities social, economic and environmental.
- Responsible tourism enhances creativity which encourages catering for the people with disabilities, elderly age and young ones.
As Uganda tourism stakeholders, we encourage and emphasize that there is tourism that does not negatively affect the environment for the future generations to use it when it is in its natural state. Our tour activities are only limited to experiences, viewing and photographs and this has a low impact on the environment and the wildlife ecosystem, as gorilla trekking is our the primary activity we have subscribed to International Gorilla Conservation Programme (IGCP) (Be Gorilla Friendly) run. Other tour activities include; cultural tours, wildlife viewing, birding experience, hiking trips, these trips can be group, safaris, couple safaris and solo travelers.
